In October last year, I joined the working group responsible for the production of the new single official UK House Price Index (UK HPI). As I was covering maternity leave for our product owner and joined the group late, I had to get up to speed pretty quickly.
The group has representatives from Land Registry, the Office of National Statistics (ONS), Registers of Scotland (ROS), Land & Property Service Northern Ireland (LPSNI) and Valuations Office Agency (VOA). We’re all working together to publish the first joint index on 14 June this year – so we’re getting close!
Have a read of an article by ONS to find out how the methodology is going to change with the new UK HPI, and I’ll explain how it’s going to work:
The new UK HPI will be on GOV.UK
We will be publishing the UK HPI on behalf of ONS and the other organisations, so you will be able to access the publication from our GOV.UK pages.
As part of the new UK HPI there will be 5 reports:
- A monthly UK summary
- Monthly reports for England, Wales and Scotland
- Quarterly report for Northern Ireland (link to their website)
There’ll also be some new statistics in the reports including first time buyer and new build stats.

New data will be added to update our House Price tool
We are in the process of updating our House Price search tool to include the data from Northern Ireland and Scotland, this will be launched on the 14 June along with the new UK HPI.
From 30 April, you will no longer be able to access our house price website. You will still be able to search all our Price Paid Data.
When the HPI will be published
The last Land Registry House Price Index will be published this Thursday 28 April for the March figures. The new UK HPI will be based on April figures, which will be published on 14 June. We will no longer publish a headline figure mid-month.
